Reading Notes on Pages 64-82



Gilgamesh Prologue
  • Epic- long narrative epic poem about legendary heroes. People used epics to see how they were supposed to behave, heroes were sort of role models.
  • Ilad was made in Greece 4000 years ago
  • Gilgamesh was made in Mesopotamia 3000 years ago
  • Beowulf was made in  England 1500 years ago
  • The story is Gilgamesh who ruled Uruk. He seems like a good character because he has built cities for his people in the name of the gods. Kings are good people who protect society
  • Uruk is a city that survives and holds its ground.
  • Ishtar is Babylonian goddess of love
The Illiad excerpt:
  • Achian is another name for Greeks
  • Hektor- best warrior of Achians
  • This scene places the reader in the middle of a war, the Trojan War. Achilleus, a Greek warrior, and Hektor, Trojan warrior, greatly abhor each other. Hektor killed a good friend of Achilleus, therefore Achilleus would love nothing more than to kill Hektor
  • Athene, daughter of Zeus, leads Hektor to Achilleus
  • Both agree to fight, and Hektor wants the victor to return the corpse of the loser to their home family.
  • Archilleus does not agree because there is too much animosity between the two men
  • Both fight, and both evenly matched, but Achilleus wins because he has the aide of the gods
  • Hektor asks to be returned to his family to have a proper burial
  • Achilleus greatly refuses the commodity
History of the English Church and People
  • Bede is a historian who documents the history of England and the spread of Christianity even if majority or people are illiterate
  • Written in Latin so it died pretty easily because who clergy understood Latin
  • Speaks of geography and areas around the city
  • Abundance of fish products 
  • Scarlet dye is symbol of power and endurance because it is a dye that does not fade
  • Bede wrote of Ireland in a nicer way... he didn't speak of snakes or anything that could view Ireland in a bad/scary way
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle 
  • Written because Bede's account is not as accurate
  •  Invasions caused much danger
  • the people were spread out so communication hard plus they never agreed on anything
  • They are unified as a culture but not in opinions
  • Picts choose kings from female blood line
  • Britain contains four languages (English, British, Scots, Latin, and Picts)
  • Picts settled in south of Britain
  • Scots are called Delreudians…dal means division
