Tale of Two Cities Lecture Notes

  • Sydney (Mike) Carten sacrifices himself for love so woman he loved can be with someone else, someone she loved deeply.
  • Listen to Dr. William describe the character's journey, "grigen sword alley, to the monet house, to the perisian locations, trans, busses, and owls go hooting, railway station, cafe, and a few haris policemen stood." Also the fact that he speaks in a british accent give me the feeling that he is describing Harry Potter going through Galagon alley.
  • Dickens shows horrors of revolutionary war
  • timeline of movie 1757-1764
  • Dickens as a youth grew up with the revolutionary wars around him, but he hated revolution bc it was violent
  • Worsening poverty gave rise to fears that revolution might happen in france
  • Novel warning of possible revolution
  • Tale of Two Cities was released in a serial, basically segments of it were released weekly/monthly.
  • Dicken builds up suspense, protagonist goes on paths, hear footsteps, and choose adventure
  • Lucie was possibly created after his wife, descriptions resemble her, a wife who left him
  • for ten minutes, he reads from the book
